July 12th has been set for nationwide vigils calling for an end to human detention camps. Candle-light vigils are scheduled at the Homestead detention facility and at the Unconditional Surrender Statue in Sarasota. Both protests begin at 7:00 PM.
A bus for Homestead will pick up riders at 2:00 PM at the Bee Ridge and Jacaranda Blvd. exits to I-75. The cost of the bus is $50 per person and you can reserve seats by emailing Indivisiblesarasota@gmail.com or calling 941-735-6017.
Coordinating the vigils is a new coaltion, Lights for Liberty, A Vigil to End Human Detention Camps, that includes Indivisible. Lights for Liberty has prompted dozens of protests for the 12th that will bring thousands of Americans out to detention camps and local venues across the country to protest the inhumane conditions faced by refugees. Also members of Lights for Liberty are Women's March, Center for Popular Democracy, One Billion Rising and Code Pink.
The Homestead facility confines around 3,000 unaccompanied teenage migrants. Indivisible members and fellow activists have been protesting the detention of children there for several months. More here.
